Our organization began in 1979
when four Placer County families, each with a mentally ill adult
son or daughter, met and discusses their mutual problems. They
found it helpful to be able to talk to someone who had
experienced similar situations coping with the stress and
suffering when one’s child becomes ill with a brain disease.
This led to out organization, now known as NAMI Placer County,
comprised of 65 families providing mutual support and
understanding about chronic brain diseases. In 1981 we
incorporated and received 501 (c) (3) status.
We hold monthly informational
meetings for family members, “care and share” sessions with
families needing emotional support, and are involved in
supporting eleven continuing programs which benefit the Placer
County mentally ill and their families. Monthly, we publish and
mail an informative newsletter to over 300 family members,
patients, mental health professionals and friends of the
mentally ill.
We advocate for better mental
health funding at local, stats and national levels and are
affiliated with NAMI California and the national NAMI. Yearly
we participate in the national observance of mental illness
awareness by inviting community leaders and friends to our
annual dinner. This is a not-for-profit occasion to promote
awareness of mental illness issues.
We have no paid employees –
all activities and programs and dependent on volunteer AMI
members and friends of the mentally ill. Funding is dependent
on contributions from families and the community.
